Rudolph Lindt
Our History Guides Our Innovation
For more than 160 years, Lindt has been a leader and pioneer in the premium chocolate industry and mastered the art of gourmet chocolate making.
Since 1845, our Lindt Master Chocolatiers have worked to bring their passion for gourmet chocolate to life, utilizing years of experience and extensive training to create the delicious recipes found in the Excellence collection.
Lindt invented the Conche in 1879
In 1879, Rudolph Lindt revolutionized the chocolate-making process in developing a unique refinement method called conching. The method involves constant stirring to refine the chocolate, allowing for the flavor to fully develop and the texture to become exquisitely smooth. Today, Excellence is still crafted using the conching process; in fact, some of our bars are refined by conching for up to 72 hours.
In 1989, with palates continuing to mature and become more sophisticated, the Lindt's Master Chocolatiers saw an opportunity to provide an even more refined dark chocolate experience to people around the world. They worked to create a new bar that would provide the finest textures, most elegant flavors, and lingering tastes that chocolate can offer. When the recipe was perfected, they gave it the only fitting name for a bar that embodies the best that premium chocolate has to offer - Excellence.
